Icons have disappeared from the desktop

This behavior usually occurs because the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned off.

If the user upgraded a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, and Show Desktop Icons was turned off in the previous Windows version, this setting is maintained, and user icons appear to be missing from the desktop. The Show Desktop Icons setting is ignored in previous versions of Windows if Active Desktop is turned off. In Windows XP, Active Desktop is always turned on and cannot be disabled.

Windows XP

1. Right-click on the desktop
2. Select Arrange Icons and ensure a check is placed next to Show Desktop Icons
3. Right-click again on the desktop and select Refresh

Windows Vista

1. Right-click on the desktop
2. Select View and ensure a check is placed next to Show Desktop Icons
3. Right-click again on the desktop and select Refresh

By default, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on for clean installations of Windows XP, but the Recycle Bin is the only icon that is put on the desktop. If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, all user icons remain on the desktop. By default, the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons are no longer put on the desktop for clean installations or upgrades. To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons back to your desktop:

Windows XP

1. Right-click on the desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab and select the Customize Desktop button
3. Under Desktop icons, place a check in the box for the icons you want to appear on the desktop.
4. Select OK.

Windows Vista

1. Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize
2. Select Change Desktop Icons
3. Place a check in the box for the icons you want to appear on the desktop

How to enable CD recording in Windows XP

The "Enable CD recording on this drive" setting turns on the built-in CD recording features included with Windows XP. The only reason to disable this feature is if you always prefer to use a third-party program and want to avoid any possible conflict between that program and Windows XP. If you don't see a Recording tab, then Windows XP doesn't recognize your CD burner's recording capabilities.

How to enable CD recording in Windows XP

1. Open My Computer, right-click the CD Drive icon, and select Properties
2. Select the Recording tab
3. Make sure the "Enable CD recording on this drive" check box is selected

How to activate Windows Vista if system was activated by a Volume License or OEM installation

This problem may occur because a specific system setting is removed when a program runs with administrative credentials. The removal of this system setting may cause a BIOS validation check to fail. The BIOS validation check is part of the system activation process. Therefore, you may be prompted to activate Windows Vista, even though the system did not previously require activation. For example, this problem is known to occur when you use Intuit QuickBooks 2007. However, this problem may also infrequently occur when you install other programs or device drivers.

Windows Vista activation is stored in the BIOS region on Fujitsu LifeBook OEM Windows Vista systems. This BIOS region is not preset on our replacement system boards (it needs to be programmed). Once the system board is replaced, Windows Vista will search for that region on the system board, and if it detects a change the End-User will be prompted to reactivate.

To resolve this problem if it has already occurred, use one of the following methods:

• If you have been prompted to activate Windows Vista, and you have not used the product key to manually activate Windows Vista, install update 931573 by running Windows Update or clicking direct link below.

• If you have been prompted to activate Windows Vista, and you have used the product key to manually activate Windows Vista, install update 931573 by running Windows Update or clicking direct link below and activate Windows Vista by telephone.

Note: If Windows Vista was preinstalled by an OEM, the product key appears on a sticker on the case of the computer.
